Hands Down, Standout Spot of the Year
Like the Energizer bunny, Grupo Gallegos’ work kept on going — and it was good. Five commercials from the Long Beach, Calif.-based Hispanic advertising agency were selected among the final tally of 13. This year, nearly 200 spots were submitted for the best creative spots competition.
Most noteworthy, “Immortal” was the only spot to get a unanimous “yes” from four of the top Hispanic agency creatives in New York who comprised the guest judge panel.
“Immortal,” a newcomer to the longtime Energizer Bunny marketing campaign, active since 1989, has just the right amount of gimmickry, value and humor to justify its gruesomeness. It’s not everyday that a spot kills off its main actor seven times over and still makes it work and worth watching again and again. Grupo Gallegos’ creative directors Favio Ucedo and Juan Oubiña are credited with the concept.
Marketing y Medios selected Grupo Gallegos as Advertising Agency of the Year in 2006, and at that time, the shop described how it had won the Energizer account: Even though the agency had been cut in the review process, CEO John Gallegos made a special pitch to the Energizer brand manager to be able to present in the final round.
Four years and numerous awards later, Grupo Gallegos continues to keep the Energizer creative fresh. — Nancy Ayala
Being immortal can be a drag. Since he found out he would live forever, the hero falls off a high-story balcony; he gets speared by a primitive hunter replica in a museum; and is electrocuted, among other indignities. Luckily, he can depend on his camera's long-lasting Energizer batteries to capture the endless memories
